7 ULFA Men Nabbed: Big Breakthrough for Assam Police

Darrang: In a major breakthrough, Darrang Police busted an extortion racket being run by United Liberation Front of India (ULFA) cadre in Assam and also apprehended seven people who have been working as recruiter for ULFA, cadre or as linkman for the banned outfit.

Sharing details of the arrests made, Amrit Bhuyan, SP Darrang said that the police arrested Khanindra Kalita, alias Jyotish who hails from Kamargaon under Siphajhar police station was acting as a recruiter for the banned outfit. Two accomplices of Kalita, Dharmendra Deka and Dhiren Kalita too have been arrested

SP Bhuyan stated that based on information shared by these three men, the police was also successful in arresting two more ULFA cadres from Udalguri- Bolen Deka who is a resident of Barangabari and Dhrubajyoti Baishya from Amlaiguri.

Mobiles have been recovered from them and it has been revealed that they had direct links with Myanmar based senior leaders of ULFA and was in constant touch with them.

ULFA has been targeting boys from poor families and planning to recruit them.

"We now have a lot of documents and information with us now about their operations. These men have been working for ULFA for the past three months and were planning to recruit youths, train them and send them back to Assam to indulge in militant activities on behalf of the banned outfit. The arrested men were also preparing demand letters for extortion and were planning to target businessmen and industrialists of Assam. Two linkmen, Prasanna Saikia alias Prasenjit Chaliha, a pro-talk ULFA member and Asim Adhikari alias Raj Dutta were picked up from Guwahati. The operations against the ULFA men were on since December 30 last and was being closely monitored and supervised by Assam DGP Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta and other senior police officials," said SP Bhuyan.
