MANGALDAI: Darrang District Freedom Fighters’ Association, to mark the 82nd death anniversary of freedom fighter and the first martyr of India hanged by the British during the Quit India Movement, Kushal Konwar, organized a commemorative event with reverence. As part of the event, a public meeting was held at the premises of Sipajhar Higher Secondary and Multipurpose School, chaired by Kamala Kanta Sharma, the Executive President of the Association.
In the meeting, which began with an explanation of its objectives by Dr Binoy Ranjan Sharma, the general secretary of the Darrang District Freedom Fighters’ Association, speakers including veteran educator Bichitra Kumar Medhi, Associate Professor of Mangaldai College Umesh Chandra Sharma, Associate Professor of Assam Engineering College Dr Utpal Kumar Nath, child welfare activist Jiten Bhagawati, and Kamaleshwar Deka from the freedom fighters’ family spoke about Kushal Konwar’s patriotism and sacrifices. They urged the representatives of the new generation to be inspired by his ideals and contribute to the service of the nation in their own ways.
Prior to the meeting, floral tributes were offered, and lamps were lit at the portrait of the martyr to express deep respect. In the function, 22 meritorious students from the families of freedom fighters in the district, who excelled in the recently announced High and Higher Secondary final examinations, were felicitated with Gamosas, book bundles, and mementos. Topper of Sonitpur district in the HS Science stream, Anwesha Goswami, was also offered felicitation.
