95th birth anniversary of Dr Bhupen Hazarika observed in Doomdooma

DOOMDOOMA: The 95th birth anniversary of Sudhakantha Bhupen Hazarika was observed at the Second Assam Police Battalion camp, Makum with much fanfare. As part of the programme, besides taking up a cleaning drive at Chota Hapjan Refugee Primary School in the morning, the jawans and the officers of the battalion camp took up cleaning drive in the whole area.

Thereafter, Assistant Commandant Girin Sonowal initiated the programme of lighting of lamp and offering of floral tribute in front of the portrait of the Sudhakantha in the venue. The women police and girl students of the battalion camp presented chorus while Prastabita Sarma, Manash Pratim Saikia, Dristirani Moran, Dhriti Das, Nishita Hatimuria and Deepsikha Sonowal presented Bhupendra Sangeet. On the other hand, Rajashri Gayan performed a dance item on a Bhupendra Sangeet. Besides them, Niren Borgohain played flute on harmony tune and Dristirani Moran presented dance.

In the open session conducted by Jayanta Kakati, the camp inspector of Second Assam Police Battalion, Siddheswar Bora explained the objectives of the meeting. He said that it was for the first time that steps was taken to observe the birth anniversary of Sudhakantha in order to create a platform for the battalions so that they could also spare some time to pay their homage to him. Writer-journalist Rupam Kakati attended the programme as guest of honour. He dwelt on at length on the philosophy and ideals of Dr Bhupen Hazarika.

On the other hand, another distinguished guest Journalist Manoranjan Moran exhorted to carry forward the ideals of Sudhakantha amongst the new generation. The meeting specially thanked Commandant of Second Assam Police Battalion, litterateur Dr Nanda Singh Borkola for the help he had extended to organize this event.

On the other hand, Saikhowa Regional Students' Union in a press statement stated that former Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal had declared on May 18, 2017 to construct a Northeast Cultural Unity Centre on a plot of 100 bighas of land near Sudhakantha Bhupen Hazarika Setu (Dhola- Sadiya bridge) at the Dhola end. But as yet no such step has been taken by the State Government. Moreover, the bridge has no provision of street light system till date although it was urged before the government several times. The students' union again appealed to the government to provide street lights on the bridge for safety of travelers during the night time.

The birth anniversary of Dr Bhupen Hazarika was also observed by Doomdooma Sakha Xahitya Xabha (DSXX) at its venue on Wednesday.
