SIVASAGAR/GAURISAGAR: Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited (ONGC), in collaboration with international well control experts, made steady and strategic progress in its efforts to control Well RDS 147A, even as it continued to rain persistently.
In a press statement, ONGC on Tuesday stated that a significant milestone in the operation was reached with the successful installation and commissioning of a 200-ton crane with an approximately 80-metre boom. Now fully operational, the crane has been playing a critical role in supporting essential activities at the site and marked a major step forward in the preparatory phase for the final well-capping procedure.
In response to the continuous rainfall, ONGC teams swiftly carried out multiple site stabilization and preparatory measures to ensure the safe deployment and functioning of the heavy-duty crane. These proactive efforts helped sustain the momentum of the operation under demanding conditions. With rising water levels in the nearby Dikhow River, the Regional Crisis Management Team (RCMT) relocated the pump system to higher ground to avoid any operational disruption. Meanwhile, water blanketing remained in continuous operation as a core safety protocol. A gas composition analysis conducted on June 24 confirmed that the discharged gas consists of approximately 97% Methane, reaffirming that the release remains within safe and manageable parameters, posing no immediate threat to surrounding habitations.
The corporation continued to work in close coordination with Sivasagar District Administration and international experts to bring the situation fully under control at the earliest, the company further stated.
