A mild 3.4 magnitude earthquake hits Tezpur, Assam

Sonitpur: An earthquake measuring 3.4 on the Richter scale was felt in Sonitpur district's Tezpur in Assam. The tremor was felt around 10.46 AM on Saturday at a depth of 10 KM. The epicentre of the quake was nearby Tezpur, Assam.

No casualty or loss of property has been reported due to the earthquake. The National Centre for Seismology informed about the quake through a tweet.

It tweeted:

"Earthquake of Magnitude:3.4, Occurred on 05-12-2020, 10:46:37 IST, Lat: 26.92 & Long: 92.67, Depth: 10 Km ,Location: 32km NNW of Tezpur, Assam, India."

The northeastern region has been experiencing frequent tremors since May-June this year. However, the highest number of quakes was felt in the months of October and November.

Earlier on November 22, an earthquake measuring 4.4 on the Richter scale was felt in a few parts of Nagaland and Assam. The epicentre of the earthquake was 11 KM east of Mokokchung in Nagaland. A day before the earthquake struck Nagaland and Assam, two earthquakes hit Manipur in the morning hours. One hit the state around 6.54 AM, which was felt in the Senapati area of Manipur. The second one hit Manipur at 10.19 AM, whose epicentre was 40 KM east of Ukhrul district of Manipur.

The entire Northeastern region of our country falls under Seismic Zone 5, which is the riskiest and earthquake-prone area. The region is also one among the most seismically active regions on earth. The other five active regions are California, Japan, Mexico, Turkey and Taiwan.

Although the earthquakes have been jolting the Northeast region, no casualty or loss of property has been reported so far. Even if these are mild earthquakes, one should always be ready with all sort of preparations.
