A Tribute to Bana Lata Das

Some are bound to die young.

By dying young a person stays young in people's memory.

If he burns brightly before he dies, his brightness shines for all time.

Only this quotation will surely suit the obituary in loving memory of a humble housewife, an inspiring mother and an ideal wife - Bana Lata Das alias Urmila Das, popularly known as Bana bou. The unprecedented pandemic in the form of COVID-19 has already taken many promising lives and this gracious lady too became a victim of the pandemic.

As she was tested positive in the last week of April and her lungs got highly infected by this deadly virus, she was initially admitted in a private hospital in Guwahati and later was shifted to the ventilator in GMCH. But her struggle with life finally ended in a tragic end in the wee hours of May 27 though she tested negative. Both her daughters and her husband had also tested positive and her husband too was admitted in Mahendra Mohan Choudhury Hospital.

Bana Lata Das was born on November 10 of 1965 as the eldest of the four children of Pradip Kumar Nath and Bhanita Nath of Galiahati of Barpeta. She completed her academic life from Sadar Balika Majaliya Vidyalaya, Juro Ram Pathak High School and MC College of Barpeta. On May 11 in 1987, she tied the nuptial knot with Ramen Kumar Das, son of eminent freedom fighter Pani Ram Das of Kalaigaon in Udalguri district, and spent her conjugal life at Kagaz Nagar of Jagiroad as her husband was an employee of the erstwhile HPC. Bana Lata Das was a pious lady and an expert in all household chores.

On this auspicious day of her adya shraddha, I offer my heartfelt tribute to this gracious lady and share the immense pain and suffering of her husband Ramen Kumar Das, daughters Anuradha Das and Hena Das and son-in-law Amit Mahanta. May your soul find a place in the heavenly abode!

Om Shanti

Bhargab Kumar Das
