A tribute to Debashish Purkayastha

Although a sense of dreaded anticipation was there, the news was still a shock for me, my friends and all the relatives of Debashish Purakayastha who died on February 5 of Cancer in Ulubari, Guwahati. Purakayastha an one-time colleague of mine in LICI, Guwahati Divisional Office was an erudite person to the backbone. He was 66. Even after his promotion to the cadre of Divisional Manager (P&IR) and transfer as Manager (P&IR), LICI, Jorhat Divisional office, we were in regular contact. While in Guwahati, I could notice his depth of knowledge in different subjects, particularly in English, though he was an MA in Economics from Guwahati University.

Not only I could learn much in English after my association with him but also he insisted on my writing frequently in The Sentinel. He was a regular reader of The Sentinel right from the paper’s inception. He was a good administrator who could get things done by his staff. He was always seen in cheerful mood and as a Manager (P&IR), he maintained a cordial relation with the Union leaders, every one of them conceded his depth of knowledge and the pleasant relation they had experienced with him when he was in Jorhat. I personally should remain indebted to him for all the help I used to receive from him. On this auspicious occasion of Shraddha ceremony I pray to the Almighty God to grant his noble soul eternity.
