My father in law Debasish Dam, retired Deputy Chief Engineer of Assam Irrigation Department passed away in Apollo Hospital, Guwahati on October 13 after a brief illness. Born on July 20, 1953, he was the son of late Nalini Mohan Dam, who was a practising lawyer in Gauhati High Court, during post independence era, and Basanti Mallika Dam.

On completion of his civil engineering degree from Assam Engineering College in 1976, he joined the Assam Irrigation Department a year later as an Assistant Engineer and rose up the ranks to retire as Deputy Chief Engineer in 2013. He was a very amiable person and was well liked by his colleagues and friends and all those who knew and interacted with him. He loved helping the poor and the needy and was known for his generosity, patriotic fervour and philanthropic activities. He was a very well read person whose passion included watching football, reading and traveling.

He is survived by wife Smti. Shampa Dam, who is a housewife, daughter Debasree Deb, a school teacher and granddaughter Sharvi Deb. His adhya shraddha will take place at his residence at Paltan Bazar on October 25.
