A tribute to Dr. Ajit Kumar Bhagawati

The sudden demise of DrAjit Kr Bhagawati, an extraordinary entrepreneur and a teacher par excellence at Khetry, far away from his hometown Lakhimi Nagar, Jorhat, left us astounded as we, his peers and associates, were wondering what really happened to Ajit till that sad news poured in on the evening of October 21.

As I go down memory lane right from the university days at NEHU Shillong in 1975-76 till staying overnight at his Jorhat residence in 2017, I can visualize a sea of change that shaped Ajit into a perfect human being with his unique perspective on societal matters, besides encompassing his own surroundings. I can vividly perceive how intricately he was attached with the staff of his lush green tea garden near Jorhat. I was quite astonished to see the bond he had with garden workers, an unusual relationship between an owner and labourers in the garden scenario of Assam, even as the garden does not exist now. He said, "I had never faced labour dispute in the garden."

Ajit took voluntary retirement from the Assam Agricultural University and Fishery College where he was Dean and became the pioneer in poultry entrepreneurship in Assam by dint of his hard work, statesmanship and dedication. By establishing poultry units across Assam and Bengaluru, he opened up new vistas of employment generation for hundreds of unemployed youths in production and marketing. He had a production unit at Khetry on the outskirts of Guwahati where he breathed his last. His remarkable contribution in entrepreneurship development while compromising his own interest must be reckoned with the highest esteem.

Ajit will be always remembered as a soft-spoken, passionate and supportive person by all members of the NEHU Alumni Association of Zoology, with which he was closely associated. Today on the day of his adyashraddha, may God bless his departed soul to rest in peace.
