A Tribute to Habul Chakrabarty

Former MLA, Municipal Chairman, Parliamentary Secretary and Senior Congress worker who hails from Dhekiajuli left for his heavenly abode on February 16 morning due to massive cardiac arrest. According to family sources, he was ailing since long and due to sudden attack in the morning he was taken to Swahid Manobar Nath hospital but considering his deteriorating condition he was shifted to Tezpur Medical College but he was declared dead.

The death news of Habul Chakraborty spread like a wildfire and hundreds of his well-wisher, party workers assembled at his residence to pay last homage to their beloved leader. People from all walks of life visited his house. Late Habul Chakraborty was born at Dhekiajuli in 1960 and did his education at Loknayak Amiya Kumar Das College. He was an active Congress worker and elected as a ward commissioner of the Dhekiajuli Municipal Board 1992. In 1993 he was elected as president in Dhekiajuli Municipal Board. In 2011 he was elected as MLA from the Dhekiajuli constituency. In the year 2015 when Tarun Gogoi was the CM of Assam he was appointed as Parliamentary Secretary. He also served as general secretary of Sonitpur District Congress and vice president of District Congress. During his tenure, he also served as a president in Dhekiajuli Netaji Vidya Mandir, Vivekananda Vidyapeeth, Sirajul High School. He was also the member of the Amiya Kumar Das College Managing Committee and connected with Dhekiajuli Regulated Market, Dhekiajuli Stage Carriage Association, Dhekiajuli Sanghasree Club, Hari Mandir Managing Committee. He also served Dhekiajuli Nagar Block Congress and Dhekiajuli Congress Committee.

His death was widely condoled by different organisations of Assam which includes Apurva Kumar Bhattacharjee of Assam Pradesh Congress committee, Ashok Singhal local MLA, Senior Citizen Association, Nagrik Manch, press club, Assam Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chhatra Parishad, local unit of AASU, Bengali Youth Federation, local unit of AMSU, and many other organisations. All shops and business complex remained closed as a mark of respect to the departed soul. His dead body was taken to the cremation ground in a funeral procession where large number of people irrespective of political differences participated.

Late Habul Chakraborty was 60 years old and survived by a wife a son and daughter. Late Chakrabarty who rose to the position of Parliamentary Secretary of Assam from a very humble beginning. He worked for the people, he had no vanity to mix with his constituency people and used to regularly visit at different part of the Dhekiajuli constituency to know the problem of the people. His door was always open and anyone can approach him for any help. He never hesitated to provide financial aid to the needy. He served as a true friend to the people and used to visit the house of the common people to know their agony. He relentlessly worked for the development of Dhekiajuli town and under his initiatives Dhekiajuli was declared as sub division. He also took initiatives to set up a Polytechnic institute at Thelamara.

The death of Habul Chakraborty is a big loss to the people of the Dhekiajuli and as a whole to Congress party. He was very courageous and bold as a person. On the occasion of Addhy Shraddha ceremony, I pay my homage to his soul and pray to almighty for the peaceful rest of the departed soul.
