A tribute to Niren Barooah

My Mama Nirendra Nath Barooah, popularly known as Niren Barooah, passed away in Pune on April 7, 2021.

Born to Debendra Nath Barooah and Subarnamala Barooah of Amolapatty, Nagaon on October 28, 1936, Barooah had his schooling in his native town and graduated from St. Edmund's College, Shillong. He served the Oil India Limited (OIL) having joined the Pipeline Headquarters of the company in the early 1960s. He went on to serve the organisation at its various locations including Narengi, Bhubaneswar and Duliajan, and left his mark as an exemplary administrator. He retired in 1995 and settled in Pune.

Hailing from a respected family of Assam, Barooah inherited the virtues of integrity and grace from his parents. His forthright manner and kind heart endeared him to all. His helpful nature was almost legendary in his official and personal circles because it embraced everyone irrespective of social or economic status. Many were the beneficiaries of his unstinted help who even today remember him with gratitude.

He was the quintessential family man and was deeply attached to his wife and two daughters. His two grandchildren deemed him as a role model. His extended family was always in his horizon as were his numerous friends and acquaintances.

Mama truly lived the dictum of 'Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam', and he spread positivity and comfort all around him. This, as also his love of the outdoors, kept him young in mind and body till his last days.

Today, on his one-month tithi, we pray to God to keep him eternally peaceful and happy in the hereafter as he was on earth.
