MORIGAON: The Ujani Asom Kalita Samanwairakhi Sammittee (AAKSS) has reiterated its demand to form Kalita Autonomous Council (KAC) and to provide ST status to Kalita community living in different parts of the State.

The organization led by its chief advisor Minal Dutta, advisor Juganta Bordoloi, president Jitu Kalita and general secretary Midu Kalita, said that the Kalita community was one of the largest ethnic communities of Assam. AAKSS has been fighting for the rights of the community for years but the government has always turned a deaf ear to their demands. In a statement, the organization urged the new Chief Minister of the State to intervene in the matter and to fulfil the demands of the Kalita community.

The organization leaders said that the Kalita Autonomous Council must include all Kalita community- inhabited areas in Assam beyond jurisdiction of one or two districts. Besides, the government must safeguard the rights of the Kalita people under the belts and blocks in Sadiya subdivision and must provide compensation to the people, including Kalita community people, who were affected by the Baghjan incident. The organization also that the birthplace of Swahid Maniram Dewan at Charing Duwapara in Sivsagar district must be freed from encroachers immediately, statues of Rani Lakhmi must be erected on the north bank of River Brahmaputra and Bhutai Deka in Nagaon district .The organization also demanded implementation of an education scheme in the name of martyr journalist Kamala Saikia.
