Bongaigaon, July 17: The All Assam Minority Students’ Union (AAMSU) Bongaigaon district committee staged a two-hour demonstration on Tuesday in Gandhi field of Bongaigaon. They demanded that harassment of local indigenous people of Assam in the name of ‘D’ voters should be stopped. “The border police are sending summons to indigenous people as D voters. This is harassment and we demand that this should be stopped,” said Azgor Ali of AAMSU.

LAKHIMPUR: The Lakhimpur district unit of All Assam Minority Students’ Union (AAMSU) staged protest in Lakhimpur against issuing foreigners’ notice to genuine Indian citizens and making the religious and linguistic minorities D-voters. Regarding the issues, the organization staged a two-hour long sit-in on Tuesday in front of the Lakhimpur Deputy Commissioner’s office. The organization alleged that at a time when the process of the preparation of NRC was about to reach its logical end, the Border Branch of Assam Police was issuing notices randomly to purported foreigners without any inquiry and in the most arbitrary manner.

“Such irresponsible and arbitrary action of the Border Branch of Assam Police is creating chaos among the genuine Indian citizens and is perceived by many as a ploy to derail the process of the preparation of a fair NRC. If such partisan attitude and unfair action of the Border Branch of Assam Police is not restrained, it will result in harassment of genuine Indian Citizens and jeopardize the very process of a fair NRC,” stated Aminur Rahman, the president of Lakhimpur district AAMSU, while participating in the programme.

The organization submitted a memorandum to the Home Minister of India through the Deputy Commissioner of Lakhimpur, requesting him to direct the Border Branch of Assam Police to refrain from issuing foreigners’ notice arbitrarily to genuine Indian citizens. Including a host of activists of the organization, district working president Imran Hussain, general secretaries Badiur Rahman and Mahtab Ali were also present in the programme. Extending support to the protest, Raju Singha, the secretary of Lakhimpur district body of Manab Adhikar Sangram Samiti (MASS), was also present in the programme.

TEZPUR: The Sonitpur district committee of All Assam Minority Students’ Union (AAMSU) protested against issuing foreigners’ notice arbitrarily to genuine Indian citizens by submitting a memorandum to the Border Branch of Assam Police through the Deputy Commissioner, Sonitpur, on Tuesday at Tezpur Court Chariali.

In this memorandum it was stated that the process of preparation of National Register of Citizens (NRC) was going on in Assam under the supervision of the Supreme Court. Muyeedul Islam, president of AAMSU Tezpur unit, said, “The process of preparation of NRC is approaching its logical end but the Border Branch of Assam Police is issuing notices randomly to purported foreigners without any inquiry and in the most arbitrary manner.”

He said that harassment of genuine Indian citizens should stop or it would jeopardize the process of preparation of a fair NRC.
