TANGLA: The Udalguri chapter All Adivasi Students’ Association of Assam (AASAA) on Monday observed ‘black day’ in Tangla town in Udalguri district, commemorating the incident when protesting Adivasi youths were brutally assaulted and a teenager, Laxmi Orang, was allegedly stripped by some locals at Beltola in Guwahati on November 24, 2007.

The student activists led by AASAA president Stephen Lakra lit earthen lamps and candles on the streets of Tangla town. Addressing the gathering, Lakra said, “Both the then Congress government and present BJP government have betrayed the Adivasi community by denying them ST status in Assam, though they are recognized as ST in other States.” AASAA activists and supporters staged a demonstration demanding ST status and wage hike for tea labourers.
