AASU expresses strong dissatisfaction over exclusion figures in final NRC list

Guwahati: Expressing strong dissatisfaction over the final exclusion figures in NRC list, AASU leaders on Saturday claimed to approach the Supreme Court soon.

It is to be noted that AASU is a signatory to the Assam Accord, a 1985 document that provided for "detection, deletion and deportation" of illegal foreigners from Assam.

Addressing a press conference in Guwahati, AASU advisor, Samujjal Bhattacharya said that there are differences in the figures of illegal foreigners which was earlier quoted by the government and the number of exclusion in the final NRC list,” adding, “We feel that there is some error in the final NRC.”

Also, AASU secretary, Lurinjyoti Gogoi said, “We are not happy at all. It seems there were some deficiencies in the updating process. We believe that it is an incomplete NRC. We will appeal to the Supreme Court to remove all the faults and discrepancies in this NRC,"

Furthermore, AASU president Dipanka Kumar Nath while expressing his unhappiness said that the organization had full faith on the Supreme Court and hence the student body would approach the apex court soon.

It may be mentioned that the process of NRC Update was started in the state of Assam as per the order of the Supreme Court of India in 2013. Since then, the Apex Court has been closely monitoring the entire process. The process of NRC update in Assam differs from the rest of the country and is governed by Rule 4A and the corresponding Schedule of the Citizenship (Registration of Citizens and Issue of National Identity Cards) Rules, 2003.

These rules have been framed as per the cut-off date of 24th March (Midnight), 1971 decided as per Assam Accord. The process of receipt of NRC Application Forms started during the end of May 2015 and ended on 31st August 2015. A total of 3,30,27,661 members applied through 68,37,660 applications.
