AASU holds torchlight rally, demands to scrap of CAA

LAKHIMPUR: The Lakhimpur district unit of All Assam Students' Union (AASU) has continued consecutive agitation programs opposing the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA), 2019 across Lakhimpur district.

The North Lakhimpur regional unit of the organization, led by president Pranjit Gogoi and general secretary Punamjyoti Burhagohain, on Saturday staged a torchlight rally at Lilabari-Ujjalpur area demanding the scrapping of the contentious Act. The rally, which was taken out from Ujjalpur Rangamancha, was organized in association with the Lilabari branch unit of AASU in the presence of the local people. Along with the AASU activists, more than 500 villagers of Lilabari, Ujjalpur, Janakpur, and Balijan took part in the stir, rocking the environment by shouting slogans opposing the Act and slamming the BJP-led governments at the Centre and the State.

Taking part in the stir, the villagers vowed to oppose the enforcing of the Act until it was scrapped. Lakhimpur district AASU general secretary Dhanmoni Dutta and AJYCP general secretary Jyoti Das were present in the program.
