LAKHIMPUR: The Lakhimpur district unit of All Assam Students' Union (AASU) has strongly opposed the State Government's ordinance where agricultural land can be used for setting up industrial units just by giving a self-declaration.

Notably, the Assam Government has passed an ordinance whereby micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) will not be required to take permission for setting up MSMEs units in the State for next three years in order to felicitate Atma Nirbhar Assam. The State cabinet passed the MSME Ordinance which put an end to the process of taking multiple permissions for setting up MSMEs in the State for the next three years.

The AASU has termed this cabinet decision as 'anti-indigenous' and said that this decision had been taken only to take away the agricultural land from the indigenous people and to abolish their land rights.

Expressing vehement resentment against this cabinet decision, almost all the regional committees under Lakhimpur district AASU staged protest by burning the dummy copy of the ordinance on Thursday. The North Lakhimpur regional unit of AASU initiated the agitation programme at Girls' HS School Chariali. While staging the protest, the AASU activists, led by president Pranjit Gogoi and general secretary Punamjyoti Burhagohain, rocked the environment by shouting slogans against Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and minister Chandra Mohan Patowari and demanding for the scrapping of the decision immediately.
