AASU Opposes Proposed Construction of Garbage Collection Centre in Tinsukia

TINSUKIA: The Tinsukia Regional Students' Union (TRSU) submitted three memoranda to the Deputy Commissioner of Tinsukia on Monday urging him to roll back the decision of Tinsukia Municipal Board to construct a 'Garbage Collection Centre' near the historical Marut Nandan Kanan (Na Pukhuri Park), to restore proper infrastructure for online classes and fixation of reasonable price in respect of per unit of blood in Tinsukia Blood Bank.

The memoranda issued by Udeep Borpatra and Nayan Jyoti Bezbaruah, president and secretary of TRSU, stated in memoranda that the proposed construction of a garbage collection centre near Marut Nandan Kanan was unfortunate at a time when the government had put thrust on conservation of historical monuments. While demanding proper care of all archaeological sites, the TRSU desired that the district administration of Tinsukia should immediately withdraw the proposal and look for alternative sites for the garbage collection centre.

Expressing concern over the high cost per unit of blood, the student leaders opined that the rate of Rs 1,300 fixed by the Tinsukia Blood Bank authority for each unit of blood was exorbitantly high which many patients were unable to pay. Thus, it demanded that the rate should be fixed in such a manner so that it becomes affordable to all.

The AASU leaders pointed out that after regular classes have been discontinued in view of the pandemic, students are subjected to acute academic loss due to poor infrastructural facilities as neither all parents could afford smartphones nor were all areas accessible to internet connectivity. In view of such a complex scenario, the AASU demanded that the department concerned must ensure that the students were not deprived of their education.
