AASU Stage Torchlight Rally Opposing Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project

LAKHIMPUR: Led by the Lakhimpur district unit of All Assam Students’ Union (AASU), the students and youth bodies of several ethnic communities of the State demonstrated torch rally in North Lakhimpur town on Friday evening against Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project SLHP.
By initiating the agitation programme, the organizations strongly opposed the moves on the part of the NHPC Limited taken for the resumption of the construction work of the SLHP set up at Gerukamukh, Dhemaji-Arunachal Border area. In addition to AASU, hundreds of activists of the All Tai Ahom Students’ Union, Takam Mising Porin Kebang, Mising Mimag Kebang, All Koch Rajbongshi Students’ Union, Tea Tribe Students’ Association, All Boro Students’ Union, Chutia Students’ Union, Motok Yuva Chatra Sanmilan, Sonowal Kachari Students’ Union, Deori Students’ Union, Thengal Kachari Students’ Union took part in the protest. The protesters rocked the environment of the town shouting anti-big-river-dam slogans while conducting the programme. They also shouted slogans against the State and Union governments regarding the issue.
