LAKHIMPUR: Continuing the stand of opposition, the Lakhimpur district unit of All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) once again came out on the streets to stage a massive protest against the contentious Citizenship (Amendment) Bill (CAB) on Monday.

The organization staged protest in North Lakhimpur town to demand immediate scrapping of the controversial Bill. The activists and dignitaries of the North Lakhimpur and Dhakuakhana subdivisional committees, 22 regional committees under the district unit of the organization and almost 500 students of various schools and colleges of the district took part in the agitation programme which was scheduled to be staged on the day as per decision taken in the recently held Jonai general meet of the organization.

On this occasion, the organization, took out a protest rally within the town from North Lakhimpur Government Boys’ HS School playground. The protesters rocked the environment shouting slogans against the Bill and opposing citizenship to aliens. They shouted slogans slamming the BJP-led Union and State governments along with Prime Minister Narendra Modi regarding the issue.

On the other hand, Lakhimpur AASU president Pulok Jyoti Borah and general secretary Dhanmoni Dutta stated in a press release that AASU would never approve of the communal and unconstitutional imposing of the CAB by the BJP government violating the conditions of the Assam Accord to secure their vote banks of Bangladeshis. “If the Union Government imposes the Bill forcefully, the situation will deteriorate,” the press release further stated. The organization sharply criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal regarding their U-turn on the alien issue.

GOLAGHAT: The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) Golaghat district committee staged protest near the Deputy Commissioner’s office of Golaghat on Monday against implementation of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016. The protesters raised various slogans against the Narendra Modi-led BJP government as well as the Sarbananda Sonowal-led State Government for taking anti-Assam policy to settle illegal Hindu migrants by amending the citizenship act.

Addressing the protesters, AASU central committee chief organizing secretary Raju Phukan strong criticized the BJP government and Sarbananda Sonowal for thinking of bringing the controversial bill to Assam again after several massive protests by various sections of people.

He said that AASU strongly opposed and warned the BJP government not to think about settling Hindu migrants in Assam through this Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016. The illegal migrants should be deported on the basis of Assam Accord, he said. The burden of illegal migrants would never be accepted. By slamming Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, Phukan said that like the Chief Minister of Meghalaya, Sarbananda Sonowal should stand up in favour of the indigenous people of Assam. AASU had given a prestigious title ‘Jatiya Nayak’ to Sarbananda Sonowal and it would not hesitate to give him the title of ‘Khalnayak’ any moment, he added.
