AASU stages protest against police atrocities in Dibrugarh

LAKHIMPUR: The Lakhimpur district unit of All Assam Students' Union (AASU) took to the street on Wednesday with extensive protest programme in Lakhimpur strongly opposing the alleged police atrocities upon the AASU activists in Dibrugarh.

Notably, the college union election at Dibru College of Dibrugarh on last Friday turned into a battlefield when both AASU and Assam Yuba Parishad, the youth wing of AGP and AVBP, attacked each other, allegedly with sharp weapons, following announcement of election results. The police intervened and sent all the injured to Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH) for treatment and brought the situation under control. The situation worsened when police raided Swahid Bhavan with no prior sign or warning and detained 12 AASU activists, out of whom five were arrested later.

By staging 'Bikhyobh', in North Lakhimpur town, Lakhimpur AASU vehemently condemned the Dibrugarh Police's acts of physically assaulting the AASU members and arresting them on the very foundation day of the organization. The organization demanded the State Government and Dibrugarh district administration as well as police department to release "each and every innocent AASU member of Dibrugarh without conditions immediately."

During the demonstration, the AASU activists, led by president Simanta Neog, general secretary Swaraj Sankar Gogoi, burnt the effigies of Agriculture Minister Atul Borah, the guardian minister of Dibrugarh district and Dibrugarh SP Shwetank Mishra. Lakhimpur AASU adviser Sanjib Konwar, Faridur Rahman, central committee executive member Dhanmoni Dutta took part in the protest programme.

Addressing the mediapersons, Dhanmoni Dutta said, "We will never tolerate the police atrocities upon the AASU members. The State Government has insulted the nationalistic organizations to pacify democratic movement. Many leaders, who once stood at the Dibrugarh Swahid Bhawan, now have turned as MLA, MP and chairman of various corporations, boards. Those leaders are now maintaining deaf and dumb attitudes even after witnessing the atrocities upon AASU activists. We have condemned them too. AASU will be going ahead overcoming all kinds of atrocities, dominating attempts."

Further, Lakhimpur AASU demanded the Chief Minister and State Government to initiate action against Dibrugarh SP Shwetank Mishra and Agriculture Minister Atul Borah and to abstain from using Police Department on political causes.
