LAKHIMPUR: Hundreds of members of the Lakhimpur district unit of All Assam Students' Union (AASU) rocked North Lakhimpur town on Friday by protesting against the present sky-rocketing prices of petroleum, diesel, liquid petroleum gas (LPG), medicines, construction materials and other essential commodities.

In this connection, the Lakhimpur AASU members staged satyagrah as per instruction served from the central committee of the organization. As part of the demonstration, the protesters took out a protest rally from the Shaheed Bedi premises covering the North Lakhimpur town. AASU central committee organizing secretary Pulok Borah, executive member Dhanmoni Dutta, Lakhimpur district unit president Simanta Neog, general secretary Swaraj Sankar Gogoi, adviser Faridur Rahman along with hundreds of members from the 22 regional units under the district committee took part in the protest programme. During the rally, the protesters rent the air by shouting various slogans to demand the State and Union governments to control price hike.

Participating in the rally, Pulok Borah and Dhanmoni Dutta criticized the State and Union governments with strong terms regarding the issue which has adversely affected the common people who are finding it difficult to make both ends meet. They called upon the ruling party leaders and MLAs not to make ridiculous statements with the intention of ruling out price hike. They demanded the Prime Minister and Assam Chief Minister to initiate steps to check the rise in prices of almost all essential commodities, including medicines, at the earliest to provide relief to the common people.

DIBRUGARH: The members of the All Assam Students' Union (AASU) on Friday staged a mass protest in Dibrugarh against skyrocketing prices of essential commodities in Assam. The AASU members took out a rally from the old High School Field to the Deputy Commissioner's office holding banners and placards and shouting slogans against the government for failing to curb price rise of essential commodities.

"The government has totally failed in curbing price rise in the State. Food and Civil Supplies minister Ranjeet Kumar Dass has failed to do his duty. Therefore, we seek his immediate resignation from office for the good of the public. The price of essential commodities has shot through the roof while fuel price has gone beyond the common people's reach. Petrol has crossed Rs 100 per litre in the State. Unfortunately, the government is acting at the behest of a handful of powerful businessmen while forgetting the struggles of the common man," said Aboni Kumar Gogoi, Dibrugarh district AASU president.

The students' body also sought the intervention of the Chief Minister to curb the price of essential commodities.

Gogoi said, "The government should immediately take steps to curb the spiraling price of essential commodities and make it affordable for the common people. The price of fuel must also come down. The government has committed to work for the people but the price rise has proved that it has failed miserably."
