LAKHIMPUR: The activists of All Assam Students' Union (AASU) rocked the environment of Lakhimpur town by resuming the stir against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019. The Lakhimpur district unit of the organization staged torchlight rally on Thursday evening in the town along with the other parts of the State reiterating the demand to repeal the contentious Act.

The AASU activists and anti-CAA activists, taking part in the agitation programme, led by Lakhimpur district unit president Pulok Borah and general secretary-in-chage Simanta Neog, shouted slogans in support of the demand and against the BJP-led State and Union governments regarding the issue. The dignitaries of the organization criticized the Union Government in strong terms for enforcing the Act, ignoring the massive protest programmes initiated by various organization and public against it.

"It is unfortunate that the Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his government disregarded the democratic anti-CAA protest and initiated move to enforce the Act across the country. The Chief Minister of Assam, Sarbananda Sonowal, who came to power with the slogan of protecting jati, mati aru bheti, extended unconditional support to the controversial Act which is a tremendous threat to the indigenous communities of Assam. But we will never approve of the Act and we will carry on our stir until and unless the Act is repealed," stated Pulok Borah in front of media persons.

In the protest programme, AASU State executive member Dhanmoni Dutta, district adviser Sanjib Konwar, Lakhimpur unit president of Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuva Chatra Parishad, Hiranya Dutta and other dignitaries of both organizations were present.
