'AASU to continue fight against CAA in both courts and streets'

MANGALDAI: "The All Assam Students' Union (AASU) will never accept the imposed Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) and will not sit idle until the government withdraws this anti-Assamese Act. The AASU is always with the people of the State and will continue its fight against this controversial act. The fight will be continued in both the courts and the streets," said the newly-elected office-bearers of AASU, including its president Dipanka Kumar Nath and general secretary Sankar Jyoti Baruah while taking part in the centrally organized Swahid Divas celebration at Mangaldai on Thursday.

Both the AASU leaders, including its chief adviser Dr Samujjal Kumar Bhattacharya, were addressing the public in the central Swahid Divas function at Swahid Bakori on the bank of River Mangaldai.

The AASU leaders strongly criticized the State Government and charged the government of double standards. "The government, which have failed to evaluate the value of the sacrifices of the Swahids and which is putting the burden of illegal immigrants on the people of Assam, has no moral right to observe Swahid Divas," said AASU general secretary Sankar Jyoti Baruah. The AASU leaders recalled the sacrifices of the 860 martyrs of the Assam Movement and the contribution of Darrang district which is regarded as its birthplace.

Earlier, AASU president Dipanka Nath unfurled the AASU flag while general secretary Sankar Jyoti Baruah initiated the smriti tarpan ceremony followed by lighting of the ceremonial earthen lamp by adviser Dr. Samujjal Kumar Bhattacharya and offering of the floral wreath at the well-decorated Swahid Bedi.
