LAKHIMPUR: "AASU (All Assam Students' Union) will herald a planned cultural and economic movement to build a new Assam. This decision was made at our organization's general conference in Lakhimpur. We will have to keep the Assamese society united with the bond culture. Politicians disposes the society. Culture repairs it," said Dr. Samujjal Kumar Bhattacharya in Lakhimpur on Monday night. He said so while delivering lecture as appointed speaker of the open session of AASU Lakhimpur General Conference organized at the Padmanath Gohain Baruah Kshetra set up at North Lakhimpur Boys' Government HS School from November 19 with three-day long programmes.

He further said that AASU had got encouragement to work for the secured future of the indigenous communities of the State with new spirit and the organization would leave no stone unturned to realize this objective.

In his lecture he expressed his resentment for non-declaration of Assam's flood and erosion problem as national problem. "Prime Minister Narendra Modi refers to the northeast as Ashta Lakshmi, but the Union Government does not refer to Assam's flood and erosion problems as national, despite the fact that the problems have destroyed the state's economic infrastructure," Dr Bhattacharya complained.

While referring to the mega river dam issue, Dr Bhattacharya demanded the Union Government to hold tripartite meeting over the two Expert Committees' reports. Regarding Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project, Expert Committee constituted by Union Government and Expert Committee of Assam have already submitted their reports. But the meeting of the both governments with AASU along with thirty anti-big dam organizations has not been held till date. The government must confront the scientific facts on the subject. As a result, the government should hold this meeting as promised in a tripartite meeting held in New Delhi a few years ago," the AASU adviser said," the AASU adviser said.

The open session was chaired by president Dipanko Kumar Nath. He said that the organization would continue its movements to safeguard the greater interest of the issue.
