KOKRAJHAR: The All Assam Tribal Students’ Union (AATSU) has opposed the implementation of Uniform Civil Code (UCC) especially in northeastern states of India to protect the prevailing age-old customary laws and their deep-rooted customs and traditions of indigenous tribal people. The AATSU has sent a memorandum to the President of India urging her to roll back the implementation of UCC in India.

The president of AATSU Hareswar Brahma and general secretary Debo Kr. Pegu in a memorandum said, “The STs of Assam are the sons of the soil, deeply rooted with various customs and traditions since time immemorial, hence, we do not accept such anti-tribal proposal draft i.e. Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in India. They said the negative impact as well as conflict of the implementation of the UCC and its objective would be constitutional mandate that aims to replace laws of different religious communities with a common set of laws governing marriage, divorce inheritance, family property divisions and other inter-related respective community practice.” The self-governing tradition, customs, usage would be uprooted by such absurd UCC in India, they added. They also said India got freedom in the year 1947, but unfortunately the member of the Scheduled Tribes is historically discriminated, exploited, oppressed, suppressed and are deprived of liberty, freedom, respect and dignity in Assam, India and also denied of rights socially, economically and politically in Assam as well as in India.

The memorandum stated that Northeast having the multi customs and traditions had to be respected. They appealed not to hurt the sentiment of any religious and social customs and traditional practices. They also said the Northeast India was one of the most culturally diverse regions of the world and for this fact the AATSU has urged the government of India to roll back such draft proposal of UCC in India and ensured that such law should not interfere in the tribal society for the interests of the tribal people of Assam.
