Abhiruchi Sports Day Observed With Fervour In Guwahati

GUWAHATI: The 38th Abhiruchi Sports Day was observed in high spirits in Guwahati on Friday. The day is observed every year on this day to celebrate the birthday of the first Arjuna awardee of the state Bhogeshwar Baruah.

As part of the observance, a cycle rally was held in the state capital. The rally, which was from Chandmari to Nehru Stadium, was flagged off by minister for sports and youth welfare Bimal Borah. Bhogeshwar Baruah was present at the flagging off event.

Chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma shared his reaction about the day on Twitter. He said he was hopeful that the Sports Day organised on the occasion would encourage youths towards sports and take the state to great heights in the field. Earlier this week, the state government came up with the decision to induct international archery champion Sanajy Boro and international boxing champion Jamuna Boro in the excise department as inspectors. The cabinet had decided to hand over the appointment letters to the duo on the occasion of the Abhiruchi Sports Day (on Friday).

Bhogeshwar Baruah, who was born on September 3, 1940, was the first Assamese to win gold at an international event. He had bagged a gold medal at the Asian Games in 1966. He won the medal in an 800-metre running event of that Asian Games. He is the first Assamese to get the Arjuna award.

In February, 2019, Sarbananda Sonowal had laid the foundation stone for the construction of a sports school after the name of Bhogeshwar Baruah at Sarusajai Complex in Guwahati.
