ABSU Decries Handing over Mid-day Meal Scheme to NGOs

Our Correspondent

KOKRAJHAR: The All Bodo Students’ Union (ABSU) on Tuesday expressed strong resentment on handing over the mid-day meal scheme to NGOs and urged the Government of Assam to take its policy back. On the other hand, the BTC has said that it will write to the government for review.

The education secretary of the ABSU, Kastom Basumatary said they had observed the implementation of a mid-day meal scheme through NGOs in Assam and numerous complaints were being received from different corners, besides a series of agitation programmes being staged. He said the handing over of mid-day meal scheme to NGOs had made the future of cook and helper uncertain.

The ABSU demanded the State Government to provide written assurance that the services and remuneration of cooks and helpers would continue, instead of the verbal assurance given by the Education Minister. He said all Deputy Commissioners, who were also nodal officers, should be instructed to discuss this issue at the district level. He also said that the quality of food served as a mid-day meal to the students was of very poor quality. The union asked the NGOs to provide quality food.

Meanwhile, the deputy chief of BTC, Kampa Borgoyary, while talking to media persons at the BTC Secretariat, said the council would write to the Government of Assam for review in this matter. He added that if the quality of food being served was poor, there should be proper analysis.
