KOKRAJHAR: The All Bodo Students' Union (ABSU) visited flood-affected areas of BTC region, including parts of Dhemaji district, and collected data of affected families. The student body has demanded central assistance of Rs 1000 crore to the State for affected villagers.

In a statement, the general secretary of the ABSU, Lawrence Islary said that the incessant rain over the past couple of weeks in Assam had affected many areas. Islary said that ABSU volunteers had visited many flood-affected areas. The central committee, ABSU had collected data from district and anchalik committees, including current status of the flood, he said.

Taking stock of the grim situation in the flood- affected districts of Assam, it was observed that the floods had cause huge loss of crops, livestock and other properties in many places. Many areas in Kokrajhar and Chirang districts had been affected by flood, with the Aie River and adjoining rivers flowing swiftly from the Himalayas. He said these rivers had eroded many embankments and submerged villages such as Dwimuguri, Subhaijhar and Charapet. The Chirang district and Bijni anchalik committe ABSU had distributed necessary materials among the affected people and sheltered them in temporary relief camps set up in the nearby areas.

These villagers have lost their crops, especially the paddy cultivation. The livestock is also facing threat due to scarcity of place to stay and food, Islary said. The general secretary said that the Baksa district ABSU had reported that adjoining rivers flowing from the Himalayas such as Pagladia and Suklai had affected many villages, forcing people to take shelter in relief camps. Most areas in Goreswar like Muripara, North Rangia and Doomduma had been flooded due to incessant rain. Similarly, the Udalguri district, ABSU reported that under Tangla Anchalik ABSU, Kulsi River has affected villages No.1 Chenipara, no 2 Chenipara, no 3 Chenipara, Bagpara, Paniputa (Ratanpur).

The reports from the Dhemaji district ABSU confirms that many villages have been submerged by the rising water level of the mighty Brahmaputra. Villages like Naokata and Maidangshri are almost under water, the roads have been washed away and embankments eroded away, said Islary. The ABSU urged the Government of Assam to extend immediate relief packages to the affected people for the loss of their properties and crops. The ABSU also urged the government to construct massive embankments to protect these villages from eroding away. The ABSU appealed to the Government of Assam to come up with special packages to protect the people from the mighty rivers that flow from the Himalayas. ABSU also appealed to the Government of India to provide support with special package of Rs 1000 crore to Assam to assist flood-affected people.
