TINSUKIA: The Tinsukia district committee of Assam Cha Jonogusthee Jatiya Mahasabha (ACJJM) stated that though Government of Assam declared 'Karam Puja' as a state holiday, but it is not a paid holiday in gardens, thus depriving tea workers from their wages. The ACJJM demanded that the Karam Puja holiday should be treated at par with other State Government holidays.

A press meet addressed at Tinsukia on Thursday by Bablu Kuldeep and Robin Kurmi, president and secretary of ACJJM, said neither the garden management nor the State Government had ever paid due importance to the festival though it is an important event of tea tribe communities of Assam. Scheduled on September 7, the ACJJM leaders demanded that the garden management of each tea garden of Assam or the State Government should organize mandatorily the Karam festival under their patronage.

A memorandum submitted to the Chief Minister of Assam stated further that the government should extend a financial grant of Rs 1.5 lakh to Karam Puja committees similar to one-time financial assistance provided to Rongali Bihu celebration committees in 2022. The memo also demanded the establishment of a state-of-the-art research centre for the Karam festival, besides construction of an auditorium in each of the 122 tea gardens in Assam.
