GUWAHATI: Ashwini Vaishnaw, Minister of Railways, Electronics & IT, and Information and Broadcasting attended the Advantage Assam 2.0 Investment and Infrastructure Summit at Guwahati. He announced several new initiatives and projects related to the railway and IT industries, which will be a giant boost to development in Assam.

Minister Vaishnaw said that the Northeast is the "new engine" of India's development. Therefore, a new railway rolling stock manufacturing facility will be set up at Basbari in Bodoland, fulfilling an important commitment of the Bodoland agreement; a facility for midlife reconstruction of locomotives will be set up at Lumding; and Guwahati Railway Station is being converted to a world-class station, with a 12-story IT park.

However, as a part of the new initiative, two Amrit Bharat Trains for Assam within the next 10 months have been initiated; two new intercity trains will be started soon—Guwahati-Silchar and Guwahati-Agartala; and quadrupling work will be carried out in the strategic Chicken Neck area.

Future projects include DPR for 18 projects (2200 km), which is under preparation. Likely investments in these projects involve 1,10,000 cr. Meanwhile, 60 Amrit stations at the cost of Rs. 2,039 Cr are being redeveloped and another semi-conductor hub will be set up in Assam.

An electronics manufacturing hub will also be set up in Kamrup District. Engineers from Assam will soon be trained at PSMC’s fab in Taiwan. The National Supercomputing Mission (NSM) has deployed a High-Performance Computing (HPC) system, PARAM Kamrupa, with a computing capacity of 838 TF at IIT Guwahati.
