TINSUKIA: After a block in the GNB Civil Hospital, Tinsukia was converted into COVID treatment hospital sharing same corridor with dialysis room and subsequently shutting down of the dialysis facilities, the patients performing dialysis have been facing extreme difficulties as the hospital has the only government supported unit managed by the Apollo Hospital in the district.

Expressing urgent need to restore dialysis facilities, Arunjyoti Moran, president All Moran Students' Union, dashed off a request letter to State Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday, urging him to create a separate internal corridor for COVID-19 wards and dialysis room. He stated that more than 45 kidney patients regularly undergo dialysis at Tinsukia Civil Hospital and the dialysis authority refused to accept the patients out of fear as the dialysis units shared the same corridor. He also pointed out that even if the dialysis unit was made operational, people would have to use the same internal corridor. Alternatively, he suggested that the Apollo Hospital could tie up with other hospital in the town having dialysis facilities where the patients could undergo dialysis without any payment.

Dr Mridul Gogoi, the hospital superintendent of the Civil Hospital, maintained that it would take another couple of months to create an exclusive corridor for COVID positive patients in the present set-up but dialysis patients should not suffer. As the entire dialysis unit was being managed privately with hospital providing only space, he too felt that the dialysis management authority should make alternative arrangement till the facilities were ready or else regular sanitization of the combined corridor would be effective.
