In Assam's Udalguri district, biodiversity NGO Aaranyak has restored two crucial irrigation canals, known locally as Dongs, with assistance from LIC Housing Finance Ltd (CSR project) as part of a significant effort to restore traditional water management techniques and strengthen climate resilience. A centuries-old water distribution system used by the native Bodo community includes the restored Bhawani Dong in Uttor Garuajhar and the Orang Dong in No. 2 Sonajuli village. These earthen canals, which are particularly important during the dry season close to the Indo-Bhutan border, redirect river water to cultivate crops and fill residential ponds.
Many Dongs became extinct over time because of the neglect and changes brought on by the climate. In recent years, the Bhawani Dong, which serves more than 10,000 people in several villages, has experienced acute water shortages. It now guarantees consistent irrigation and better access to water after restoration. Over 650 people and almost 500 bighas of farming are supported by the Orang Dong in Sonajuli. During crucial cropping times, its restoration has decreased water stress and rekindled agricultural activity. Importantly, the project restored not only water flow but also grassroots water governance by enlisting the help of the community and reactivating traditional water committees to maintain the canals and supervise equitable distribution.
