Agitation programme declared against Subansiri Hydroelectric Project

LAKHIMPUR: After the National Green Tribunal’s (NGT) verdict in favour of the 2000 MW Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project (SLHP) and the stamping of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between NHPC Limited and Assam Government regarding the resumption of the construction works of the contentious hydroelectric project, several anti-big river dam organizations took to the streets in Lakhimpur to protest against the project.

Namoni Subansiri Bandh Birodhi Sangrami Aikya Mancha also declared its agitation programmes opposing the big river dam project on Friday. This organization, which came into being in Lakhimpur as a common forum of more than 20 anti-big river dam activist organizations of the State as well as the district, will organize a mega public meeting in North Lakhimpur against the SLHP on September 28. This initiative of organizing the programme was declared as per the decision taken in a meeting of the forum held on Friday. Views and suggestions over the issue from people of every walk of life will be oriented in the programme, and the forum will undertake further agitation programmes against the SLEP.

The office of the newly-constituted Namoni Subansiri Bandh Birodhi Sangrami Aikya Mancha was inaugurated at the Hazarika Market campus of North Lakhimpur town on Friday. Then the crucial meeting of the forum was held with anti-big dam activist Keshab Krishna Chatradhara in the chair while one of the chief conveners of the forum, Raju Singha explained the objectives of the programme. After detailed discussion, the forum chalked out an agenda regarding their projected programmes against the SLEP in the upcoming days. In the same programme, the representatives of the partner organizations vowed to close the controversial SLHP at any cost and to face any circumstances to achieve their goal.
