GUWAHATI: AIIMS Guwahati celebrated the successful completion of one year of its Drone-Based Healthcare Delivery Service on February 20, 2025. Launched on the same date in 2024, the initiative was envisioned by the Prime Minister of India to improve healthcare access in remote and riverine areas. The service uses drones to deliver medical supplies and respond to healthcare emergencies more efficiently.
The ceremony was hosted by Prof. Ashok Puranik, Executive Director of AIIMS Guwahati, and attended by key dignitaries, including Kamrup District Commissioner Deba Kumar Mishra, and several healthcare and drone technology experts. Prof. Puranik discussed plans to expand the initiative to more regions.
The service has proved especially beneficial in areas like Goroimari CHC, Batahidia Char PHC, and Bongalpara Char PHC, where traditional transport methods are slow. Drones have reduced travel time by up to 95%, ensuring timely delivery of medicines and samples for testing.
Over the year, the service has delivered vital supplies such as Rabies Immunoglobulin, supported outbreak investigations, and facilitated teleconsultations.
The success of this service is attributed to collaboration with TechEagle Innovations Private Limited and the dedicated work of local medical officers and drone operators, known as "drone didis."
The service has significantly improved healthcare access and outcomes in remote areas, making it an essential part of the region's healthcare system.
