Charaideo: In a scathing/harsh attack, Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) president Lurinjyoti Gogoi on Monday accused Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma of committing “treason,” claiming the state government has deliberately failed to act against illegal immigrants for over a decade. Gogoi demanded strict punishment under treason laws and accused the CM of attempting to sow communal discord ahead of the upcoming state elections.
Gogoi stated that the responsibility of identifying and deporting illegal immigrants lies solely with the Centre and the state governments. “Instead of taking real action, the government has shifted the burden onto regional parties and communities to create pressure. This is not their job it’s the government’s duty,” he said.
He alleged that the Chief Minister is deliberately inciting communal tensions between Hindus and Muslims in Assam, aiming to destroy the state’s longstanding social harmony. “For the last 11 years, the government both at the Centre and the state has taken no significant steps. Now, with elections 6-7 months away, evictions and dramatic moves in tribal belts are being used as a political tool,” Gogoi said.
The AJP leader criticized recent eviction drives in tribal belt areas, calling them “meaningless” given that illegal occupancy had gone unchecked for years. He claimed the timing of these actions reveals a clear electoral strategy. “Assam’s people are politically aware. These strategies will fail to manipulate voters,” he added.
