LAKHIMPUR: The district of Lakhimpur was rocked with massive protest programmes on Monday against the unprecedented hike in the prices of petrol and diesel across the nation.

Regarding the issue, the activists of the Lakhimpur district unit of Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuva Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) burnt the effigy of Union Petroleum Minister Dharmendra Pradhan at Court Tiniali of North Lakhimpur town. The organization demanded the Petroleum Minister to take steps immediately in order to lower the hiked prices of petrol and diesel . The activists of the organization, led by president Mondeep Neog and general secretary Jyoti Das, rocked the environment by shouting various slogans against the Union Government, the Petroleum Minister and in support of their demand. AJYCP central committee assistant general secretary Sourabh Das, dignitaries of the regional committees of the organization, were also present while staging the protest.

On the other hand, the Lakhimpur district Congress Committee (LDCC) initiated dharna in order to protest against the hike in the prices of petrol and diesel. In connection with the issue, LDCC organized a protest meeting in front of the Lakhimpur District Transport Office.

"Despite the decrease in the prices of petro-products in the international market, the BJP government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has tortured the people of the nation by hiking the prices of petrol and diesel. An anti-people government like this has no moral right to stay in power," said LDCC president Dr. Joy Prakash Das while expressing vehement resentment against the Union Government regarding the issue.

Criticizing the government in strong terms, Dr Das demanded the Prime Minister to decrease the prices of petrol and diesel to relieve the common people during the adverse situation caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and ongoing lockdown. The dignitaries of LDCC and the brother-sister organizations of the political party were present in the protest programme.
