NAGAON: The Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba-Chatra Parishad organized a massive torch rally across the state in protest against the recent directives issued by the Assam government on Friday night. The directives, based on the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), instruct District Commissioners and Superintendents of Police to withdraw cases against non-Muslim immigrants (Hindus, Christians, Jains, Sikhs, Parsis, and Buddhists) who entered Assam before December 31, 2014.

The central committee of the organization led by President Palash Changmai and General Secretary Bijon Bayan, issued a press statement condemning the move, stating that Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s attempt to divide the people of Assam based on religion will not be tolerated. The statement also warned against using the CAA as a political tool while the Act is still under judicial scrutiny.

During the rallies, protesters in Nagaon chanted slogans against the CAA, demanding its rejection, and called for the implementation of the Assam Accord and the updating of the National Register of Citizens (NRC). The protesters also targeted the Chief Minister and the Home Department. Despite attempts by the Nagaon police administration to obstruct the programme, the rally was successfully held, with thousands of protesters participating. The Parishad warned that the movement will intensify if their demands are not met.
