GOLAGHAT: The members of Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Parishad (AJYP) Golaghat district committee staged a three-hour sit-in near the Deputy Commissioner’s office on Thursday against the construction of big dam of Lower Subansiri Hydro-electric Project (LSHEP). The activists shouted various slogans against the Narendra Modi-led Central Government as well as the State Government.

Talking to the media, the general secretary of AJYP, Nipon Gogoi strongly opposed the construction of big dams and slammed the Narendra Modi-led BJP government for not thinking about the people living in the downstream area. He said that after coming to power for the second term, the BJP government took initiative to construct the big dam of LSHEP by ignoring the expectations of the people living in the downstream.

Further, he said that the big dam of LSHEP would completely destroy the culture and society of people living in the downstream. He also added that the people of Assam would be adversely affected by the 2000 MW Lower Subansiri Hydro-Electric Project.

AJYP Golaghat district committee said that if the government did not stop the construction of big dams, then the AJYP would launch a massive agitation against the government with the help of the people of Assam.
