AKRSU demands submission of the final report on ST status to six communities

TANGLA: The All Assam Koch Rajbongshi Students' Union (AKRSU) has sharply reacted to the statement of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma who stated that Scheduled Tribe (ST) status to the six communities of Assam has been deferred due to stiff opposition from the present communities enjoying ST status.

The president and general secretary of the students' body, Puren Ray and Dibyajyoti Kumar Deka, on Sunday strongly lambasted the stance of the State government and said that the six communities viz. the tea tribes, Tai Ahoms, Chutias, Koch Rajbongshis, Mottocks and Morans have been demanding ST status through democratic means and the present government also assured of fulfilling the demand as a part of its pre-poll promise. The students' body further asserted that it was a matter of great dismay that despite the communities fulfilling the pre-requisites of ST community, the government through its daily dillying tactics had delayed the submission of its final report on the Scheduled Tribe (ST) status of the six communities .

The students' body, while reiterating its demand, said, "The government is trying to sow the seeds of division among the six communities by making statements that the present ST communities have partially agreed to grant 70 per cent reservation to two communities and not the remaining four." AKRSU demanded submission of final report on ST status of six communities at the earliest and warned of stirring up massive democratic protest if the six communities, including the Koch Rajbongshis, are not granted ST status.
