Guwahati: Liquor shops which faced losses last year due to COVID-induced lockdown, has finally got a reason to celebrate this Diwali as the sale of alcohol witness a massive jump in the city.

According to reports, Alcohol worth Rs 5 crore was sold in the occasion of Diwali on November 4th and 5th in the city.

The Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) worth Rs 5,01,32, 000 sold in Guwahati of which IMFL worth Rs 2,56,70,000 was sold on November 4 while alcohol worth Rs 2,44,62,000 was sold on November 5.

Reportedly, a day ahead of Diwali i.e., on Wednesday, the demand for liquor increased in the city and reached its peak on Diwali evening on the next day.

There were also reports that some liquor shops on Thursday operated till late evening. However, the concerned department couldn't identify the shops.

Meanwhile, it is not only liquor which made headlines during the Diwali but accident too.

During the two days (November 4 and 5, 2021) of Deepawali festivities, Assam witnessed 242 road traffic accident cases. Of these, the highest number of 19 road traffic accident cases were logged in Sonitpur District followed by 17 in Dhemaji.

There were such 15 such accidents in Kamrup; 14 each in Golaghat and Morigaon; 12 each in Nagaon, Majuli and Tinsukia; 11 each in Cachar and Nalbari; 10 in Baksa; nine each in Kamrup (M) and Darrang; eight each in Barpeta, Goalpara, Jorhat and Sibsagar, seven each in Bongaigaon and Lakhimpur; five each in Dibrugarh and Karimganj; four each in Chirang, Karbi Anglong and Udalguri; three in Kokrajhar; two each in Dhubri, Dima Hasao and Hailakandi.

According to sources on November 4, the maximum number of 129 cases were registered in the State while on November 5, the State logged 113 mishap cases.

''During the two days of Diwali in the State, there were 13 burnt cases,'' the sources added.
