LAKHIMPUR: The Lakhimpur district unit of All Adivasi Students’ Association of Assam raised strong voice demanding the legitimate punishment of the excise department officials and police personnel, as a consequence of whose dereliction resulting in unabated production of spurious local liquor, more than 150 tea garden workers of Golaghat and Jorhat districts had to lose their lives in the State’s worst hooch tragedy that happened recently.

Regarding the issue, the activists of the organization demonstrated a two hour long sit-in in front of the Lakhimpur DC office on Friday. Staging the agitation programme, the organization demanded the State government to ensure exemplary punishment to those who were responsible for the playing of vulgar game with the precious life of human beings. Further the organization demanded the Government to secure the members of the bereaved family of those tea garden workers of the Shalmora, Usha Garanga and Jogibari tea estates under Golaghat district and Titabor and Borhola tea estates under Jorhat district, who made the supreme sacrifice by consuming the spurious local liquor. In this regard, the organization submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal through Lakhimpur DC.
