GUWAHATI: Realizing that each individual has an inherent engineering mind irrespective of their adopted professions, the All Assam Engineers' Association (AAEA) greeted everyone on the auspicious occasion of Engineer's Day, which is celebrated on 15 September across India.

The forum of graduate engineers also wished a productive life for every professional engineer across the country, even after their retirement from professional work.

Engineer's Day is celebrated to commemorate the birth anniversary of India's first and finest civil engineer and 19th Diwan of Mysore, Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya. He received India's highest civilian honour, Bharat Ratna in 1955.

Here are some of M  Visvesvaraya's  key contributions:

1. He was instrumental in designing and patenting a system of automatic weir floodgates in 1903

2. M V (as he is popularly called) was the architect of the Great Krishna Raja Sagara Dam in Mysuru. This is one of the major contributions of Visvesvaraya to Karnataka and to the nearby states.

3. He designed a flood protection system for the city of Hyderabad by Mussi River.

4. He is the one who designed a plan for road construction between Tirumala & Tirupati

5. Sir M V played a key role in developing a system to protect Vishakapatnam port from sea erosion.

6. He was responsible for founding the Mysore soap factory, the Mysore Iron & steel works (Bhadravathi), Sri Jayachamarajendra Polytechnic Institute, The Bangalore Agricultural University, and the State Bank of Mysore.

7. M V was awarded an Honorary Membership of the London Institution of Civil Engineers for an unbroken 50 years.

8. He was an Engineer who had planned the Indian Economy in 1934.

Notably, Engineers are considered the backbone of every nation. India continues to produce more than 1.5 million engineers every year from its over 4000 institutes and has a huge number of professional engineers across the world. Indian engineers are always welcomed in various countries for their meticulous thought processes and skills to solve various problems. Millions of aspiring students appear in entrance examinations every year for getting admission to favoured engineering colleges & universities in India, where the students are offered several streams of engineering like civil, mechanical, electrical, aeronautical, chemical, environmental, electronics, computer science, etc.

"Once engineers were projected only as corrupt professionals in various Indian literary works and movies, the people now start recognizing the contributions of engineers. The annual celebration helps the engineers to reorganize their commitment to innovative contributions to the nation," said AAEA president Er Kailash Sarma, working president Er Nava J. Thakuria and secretary Er Inamul Hye.

Also, the forum also wished every Indian for the forthcoming Vishwakarma Jayanti celebrated on 17 September for worshiping the god of engineering, the divine architect of the universe, adored by numerous engineers, mechanics, smiths, artisans, craftsmen, factory workers, etc.
