TANGLA: All Assam Rabha Students’ Union (ARSU) along with representatives of various other organizations and locals of the town staged two hours sit in protest against the custodial torture of local youth by Tangla police personnel and demanded unconditional release of the youth at Tangla town in Udalguri district on Friday. Talking to mediapersons, Rabha National Council(RNC) President Prafulla Rabha strongly condemned the atrocities of police and demanded proper inquiry and unconditional release of the youth. Former student leader Saiful Haque taking part in the protest lamented that police are custodians of life and property but what happens when they turn predators. “There are scores of civilians working as police officers who settle bribe amount in the station” said one of the protestors.
Later a memorandum was also submitted by All Assam Rabha Students’ Union to Chief Minister through the office of SDO(C) Bhergaon. According to reports, the youth Anup Rabha was arrested by Tangla Police on the basis of an FIR by Jeet Malakar on August 5. The father of the youth had alleged that a probationary sub-inspector ranked officer and officer-in-charge had demanded money and on refusal tortured his son. Later he was produced before court which sent him to judicial custody.
