LAKHIMPUR: The activists of All Assam Students' Union (AASU) resorted to massive protest at the North Lakhimpur Division Assam State Transport Corporation (ASTC) office on Friday, opposing the alleged irregularities on the part of the office concerned with regard to allowing the station campus for business purpose.

Regarding the issue, the activists of the North Lakhimpur regional unit of the organization gheraoed the ASTC Divisional Superintendent office and locked down the same. While leading the protest, North Lakhimpur regional AASU general secretary Punamjyoti Buragohain alleged that the ASTC Divisional Superintendent office had allotted the office campus to businessmen without following hard and fast regulations.

"The office has collected revenue from these businessmen illegally. Most of these businessmen have no trade license while some of them have not renewed the same. Moreover, the local unemployed youths have always been deprived by the office in this regard and non-Assamese people have been accorded preference. In this connection, we have submitted a number of memoranda to check the illegal activities of the office. But we found no response from the district administration in this regard which compelled us to lock down the office," Punamjyoti Buragohain asserted.

Notably, some days back, the Divisional Superintendent and the Station Superintendent had a confrontation with a local youth who was running business in the station campus. The youth then informed the matter to AASU seeking the intervention of the organization regarding the issue.

Following the protest programme, an executive magistrate launched an inquiry against the commercial institutions at the station campus and he found various irregularities. The district administration closed these commercial institutions for indefinite time.
