All Assam Students’ Union, Indian National Trade Union Congress Protesting Secret Move to Privatize Oil Fields

JOYSAGAR: Protesting the secret move to privatize many oil fields as well as crude oil rigs of the ONGC and OIL in Sivasagar district, the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) and the Indian National Trade Union Congress (INTUC) Sivasagar district chapters staged a dharna programme on Friday in front of the main gate of the ONGC and OIL at Nazira and Moran respectively.

The protesters alleged that the top authorities of the ONGC and OIL are preparing to hand over the Gelakey oil field under ONGC, Assam Asset to one Canada based private company. On the other hand the Oil India Limited was also secretly preparing to hand over its Sapekhati basin oil field and Mahmora Dipling oil field to one M/S Rammayya Ispat Pvt. Ltd.

The organizations alleged that with a huge illegal and unethical transactions with the private companies, some of the dishonest top officials of the ONGC and OIL are planning to hand over their most profitable crude oil field and basins which would badly affect the local unemployed people of the areas as well as the casual employees of the oil companies. To protect the rights of the locals and also to protect the natural wealth of the country, the organizations are staging such democratic protests and demanded intervention of the BJP-led Sonowal government so as to save local Assamese labourers involved in the ONGC and OIL. The leaders of both the organizations have sent separate memoranda to the Union Petroleum Minister as well as to the Assam Chief Minister at the end of the demonstration.
