SIVASAGAR: The Sivasagar district unit of All Assam Students Union (AASU) has strongly opposed the alleged move of ONGC to hand over the Geleki oilfield to Schlumbereger Pvt Ltd and threatened a democratic protest movement against the ONGC.

In a release, signed by Ashim Dutta, president, and Samiran Phukan, general secretary, of the student body, it was stated that the ONGC, despite repeated protests from various organizations against privatization of oil fields, had virtually overlooked the local people’s interest and was hell bent on leasing out the most profit-making field which was developed at a whopping cost of Rs 262 crore recently to augment production, to a private company.

AASU in the release stated that on December 20, 2016 and on October 13, 2017, the Executive Director of ONGC, Assam Asset, was apprised of the demands of the student body which included clauses regarding opposition to privatization of oil fields.

The student organization warned the leading PSU not to go ahead with their privatization programme. Sarat Hazarika, education secretary of All Assam Students Union (AASU) central committee, said that the global player might have forgotten the earlier bitter experiences of bandhs and barricades adopted by various organizations against it largely due to its anti-people policies. The AASU unit through the release reminded the ONGC authority of sterner moves against it if it choose to continue overlooking their demands.
