LAKHIMPUR: The Lakhimpur district unit of All Assam Students' Union (AASU) will initiate intensified stir against various issues which have posed a threat to the common interest of the State. This was declared by Lakhimpur district unit AASU president Pulokjyoti Borah and general secretary Dhanmoni Dutta in a press release. Lakhimpur AASU took this decision in its executive body meeting which was held on Friday with Pulokjyoti Borah in the chair.

The press release further informed that detailed discussion was held in the meeting on Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA), draft of Environment Impact Assessment (EIA), NHPC and Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project (SLHP) and Assam- Arunachal border dispute. Through the executive body meeting, Lakhimpur AASU issued strict warning to NHPC not to transport construction materials to SLHP site taking advantage of the night curfew enforced across the State to prevent the spread of COVID-19 pandemic.

As per resolutions adopted in the meeting, the organization will stage strike in North Lakhimpur town on August 10 against CAA. Human chain will be formed in every regional body area as a mark of protest against the controversial draft EIA on August 17. Similarly, mass protest programmes will be initiated in the jurisdiction of each and every regional committee on August 20 against the unabated encroachment conducted by the people from Arunachal Pradesh upon the land of Assam belonging to Lakhimpur district and to flay the lackadaisical attitude of the district administration as well as the Forest Department and the State Government with regard to preventing the encroachers. The organization will intensify its stir against NHPC and SLHP very soon, stated the press release.
