KOKRAJHAR: The All Bodo Students Union (ABSU) on the occasion of the celebration of International Day of Non Violence at Patgaon in Kokrajhar district again completely rejected the idea of arms struggle through a grand peace rally and called upon all to maintain peace and communal harmony.

On the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti, the ABSU burnt down symbolic arms and shouted slogans against violence and arms struggle. The union called upon the misguided youths who were inspired to the path of arms movement to come back and go through Gandhian philosophy.

As part of the programme, the president of the ABSU Dipen Boro hoisted the organizational flag while the Indian National flag was hoisted by Dr. Subung Basumatary, principal of Janata College. Retired principal of Kokrajhar College Surath Narzary offered flowers at the portrait of Mahatma Gandhi while symbolic burning down of guns and signature campaign for peace in the society was done by Dr. Kumud Ranjan Basumatary, Principal of Gossaigaon College and Baneswar Basumatary, president of Kokrajhar district Bodo Sahitya Sabha (BSS). Dr. Sirathi Swargiary, associate professor of Janata College and Dukeswar Brahma, retired head master of Patgaon ME School released pigeons for peace while peace rally was flagged off by Director of UN Academy Krishna Gopal Basumatary respectively.

Talking to reporters, the president of the ABSU Dipen Boro said the student body organised the grand mass gathering in connection with the observation of International Day of Non violence to focus on peace and communal harmony through Gandhian philosophy. He said the ABSU had been quite vocal against violence and used to raise strong voice against arms struggle in the society for which the union took a symbolic burn down of arms on the occasion to give message to misguided youths.

"The people of the region had witnessed movement for separate Bodoland state through non violence of ABSU led by Bodofa UN Brahma and subsequent signing of BAC accord in 1993. Later, we saw arms struggle of BLT and signing of BTC accord in 2003 in which so many Bodo youths have lost lives. The ABSU started raising voice against arms movement", he said adding that the people have witnessed arms struggle of NDFB factions but in the long run, the BTR accord was signed through democratic movement. He called upon all to stay away from arms organizations run with emotion by some misguided youths.
