KOKRAJHAR: The All Bodo Students' Union (ABSU) expressed anguish over the series of killings of tribal women by way of rape and murder and witch hunting in different places within a week. The ABSU said that it was seeking information regarding rape and murder in different places of Assam amidst the second wave of pandemic COVID-19.

The president of ABSU, Dipen Boro, in a press meet held at Bodofa House on Tuesday, said that on April 10, a tribal girl named Anjali Basumatary was allegedly raped and murdered by a group of bad elements. The ABSU urged the government to arrest all the culprits and punish the accused with stringed punishment.

"The ABSU strongly condemns the incident of rape and murder of Sumila Ronghangpi, the teenage girl belonging to the Karbi tribe, at Raha, Nagaon. She worked as a domestic help in the house of Prakash Borthakur, who was brutally set ablaze by the suspects," he said, adding that perpetrators of the brutal incident must be arrested and punished as per law. This incident occurred on April 22, 2021 and the ABSU urged the State Government had assured to ensure justice to the victim girl, he added.

Boro said that the recent killing of an elderly woman at No.1 Gerguajuli under Rangapara Police Station of Sonitpur district was very unfortunate and detrimental to the society. He said that one Lakheswari Dwimary, aged 57 years, and her grandson were in the house when miscreants started firing and Lakheswari Dwimary died on the spot while her grandson had a narrow escape. The ABSU condemned the incident in strongest terms and demanded the government to ensure safety and security of common people. The union also demanded that the culprits be punished according to the law.

The ABSU president also appealed to the entire section to shun superstition. Dipen Boro said, "It was unfortunate to hear about witch hunting in the age of rapid progress in medical science. The ABSU appealed to all sections of people in the society to follow the SOP and COVID-19 protocols as per the guidelines by the government to prevent the spread of deadly disease.
